Project Description
The Hickman Road over Tuolumne River Bridge Replacement Project will replace the existing bridge with a new 750-foot structure built immediately upstream. The existing bridge was built in 1964 and has been determined to be “Structurally Deficient”. The new bridge will provide two 12-foot traffic lanes with eight-foot shoulders and add a five-foot sidewalk for safe pedestrian and bicycle access.
The new Hickman Road Bridge will be a cast-in-place, post tension box girder consisting of five spans. It will be supported by two cast-in-drilled-hole pile shafts at each pier. The piles range from 84 to 108 inches in diameter, with lengths up to 123 feet. Approximately 450 feet of roadway will be realigned before and after the new bridge in order to conform into the existing Hickman Road.

Key Project Elements
The first part of the bridge to be constructed is the foundation. This will include 8’ reinforced concrete pile shafts up to 10’ in diameter and 123’ deep. They will have to be constructed underwater using state-of-the-art construction techniques and testing processes to ensure the structural integrity of the bridge.
- A temporary trestle is being constructed across the river to provide access for the bridge construction. This temporary structure will support cranes, pile driving equipment, concrete trucks, and other heavy construction equipment. It will remain in place for the duration of the bridge construction.
The new bridge will be up to 85’ above the ground. In order to build it, a tall “falsework” support structure must be constructed over the river. It will consist of 24” wide pipe piles, steel beams, and cable bracing. It is designed to support the entire weight of the new bridge until the bridge is completed.
- The existing bridge is home to more than 6,000 bats. Mitigation measures will be taken to protect them during construction. The new bridge will include bat “houses” inside the box girder superstructure to provide a new home for the bat colony.

Current Construction Update
Construction crews began work on Hickman Road over Tuolumne River Bridge Project on June 2020. The $18 million, 750-foot long, 75-foot tall, 5 span bridge replacement project has primarily involved building the bridge foundations and substructure. The bridge is supported on 100-foot deep piles with diameters ranging between 8 and 10 feet. All of the bridge abutments and columns have been completed.
Falsework and superstructure construction is currently underway, which consists of a 48-foot wide by 7-foot deep 3-cell, post-tensioned concrete box girder. Construction on the new bridge will continue into the winter.
Environmental Status
The project is being carefully constructed under a variety of environmental State and federal permits aimed at protecting fish, wildlife, plants, and water quality. A team of biologists, including fish, bat, bird, and water quality specialists are monitoring the project to help maintain compliance with all environmental requirements for a clean and safe project.
Project Funding
Funding for this project includes the Highway Bridge Program (HBP), Local Seismic Safety Retrofit Program (LSSRP), and local fees.

Construction of the new bridge began in June.
Current work includes constructing a temporary trestle across the Tuolumne River. This will provide access for the equipment used to construct the bridge. Work has also begun on the bridge foundation. This includes constructing eight concrete piles ranging from 8’ to 10’ in diameter concrete pile extending nearly 120’ deep underground. After the piles are completed, the columns will be poured and layout of the new bridge will begin to take shape.
